Barcamp Mumbai University Part II

Windows Vista Demo: Cool flashes, cool fade in and fade out features. Windows switching is cool. Then the widgets on the sidebar are really good, but just look like the Google desktop sidebar. They have the instant search just like the Google desktop. It’s very simple to add things on to your sidebar. You can plug-in your flash drive and use the free space on it to page swap and that will fasten up the system. Viewing images is better but again just like Picasa and have not that many options, but Picasa is a product esp. for it, anyways the feature is cool. The media center is very sleek looking. If you have multiple multimedia app running you can individually control the volumes of each app through the volume control. There are 17 editions of Vista. It’s not yet hacked, hackers are still trying. There are certain hacks but as soon as you update anything from MS your system becomes disabled.

Games on Linux: Sanket Medhi talked about how to play your favourite games on Linux. Install Wine, which is a windows simulator and using this you can run all the windows apps on your linux. I remember it came with Suse or Mandrake Distro. It is very simple to use. Though I never tried games on Linjux distro. Acoording to Sanket you can go to linuxgamers.com and there you will get the installation guidelines for most of the famous games. Cedega is the commercial bro of the Wine. The Cedega Gui is good and makes the life very easy, but comes for a price.

Presentation from Shauvik was really informative he talked about Open source tools using whih you can build really cool apps and they make development very easy and without adding cost. Some of the things he talked about were: www.portableapps.com a nice site for various opens source apps, Nvu the open source of the Dreamweaver, Gimpp the OS bro of photoshop, Xampp a portable server readily configured and can be used easily, Php myadmin a tool to admin your DB, Programmer notepad is a cool IDE, www.webdesignfromscratch.com the name is good enough, www.openwebdesign.com on similar lines, Aptana an eclipse based IDE for Ajax and JS, www.aptana.org & www.aptana.tv for info on Aptana. Gaawd so many things but it was very informative and he was very keen to show them all.

Wimax: Alok gave a short (finally someone was thinking about time there) but very good presentation on Wimax. Wimax is been used in certain states in US, in few countries in EU. Echoupal is a Wimax project in UP in India.

It was a really good experience and was very well managed by Ashutosh Deo and Sidharh Doshi good show guys.

Barcamp Pune2Was a success.

I thought while going through :

1. beautiful campus of KJ Somaiya on my way back to home.
2. dinner talks with my roommate wearing the Barcamp MU T shirt.
