Corporate IT Vs Personal IT

Presentation on Corporate IT Vs Personal IT.

Let's start with a fairly simple definitions of Corporate It and Personal IT.

Corporate IT: The IT which deals with solving the prblems of Corporates is called the Corporate IT. How to optimize the Supply Chain? How to help the business earn more money?

Personal IT: The IT which deals with solving personal problems is called Personal IT. Think of email, it solved a big problem of exchanging messages. So has instant messaging and now with social networking the need to connect with people and saty in touch with contacts. Youtube let us share the videos, Flickr let us share pics and there are so many examples of Personal IT services.

It leads to a point that what is IT? IT is about solving problems and automating the processes whereever possible. IT is essentially about enabling business earn more money may be through better productivity or by cost cutting.

Where you want to be, in Corporate IT or in Personal IT? There are good opportunities in both the worlds, Corporate IT is all about building huge enterprise solutions that will lead to better business. Personal IT is a cool space with all the new services and products it's an exciting place to be. In this space you get to do a lot of innovations and work on the bleeding edge of technology. In corporate IT you get to work on different challenges all together, like a company has all the systems in place but want to integrate all of them, you get to interact with the legacy systems and sometimes replace them, which is also very exciting to work on.

With web2.0 the entry into Personal IT space has become very easy and simple. The cost of building good services is also next to nothing. You can have all the Open Source free softwares that will help you in building the product or service. The new technolgies are easy to get train with, most of the time there is hardly a learning curve involved. The cost of launching your product is also very low, advertising and promotions costs are low with the help of Google ads. Compare this with Corporate IT, the cost of the licences of develoment tools is huge, the technology learning curve is high and the cost of training is also high. The cost of launching and promotions take a big chunck of the budget.

Now, the interesting part about personal IT is this:
YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock
Facebook is worth $2 billion
MySpace is worth $15 billion

These are crazy figures, and that's what has got the attention of Corporate IT world. They are thinking of a new strategy where they are on lookout for two guys in garage with a good idea and they are ready to take them from garage to their premises. Pay these guys, let them pursue their idea, if out of 10 even 1 succeeds they will make a huge profit and if they fail, they anyhow don't lose much. The Personal IT and Corporate IT spaces are merging lines and nothing but economics is leading to this change.

I thought while going through :
1. news about the evaluation of various web2.0 startups

2. having an animated discussion with some friends about how Youtube is different from IT Services companies.

very true indeed.

I heard Google makes it mandatory for its employees to work on Personal IT projects every Fridays.... and Orkut was one of these Personal IT projects......

That is one of the best thing Google has done for it's employees. It attracts more & more people to join Google.
BTW Orkut was not one of such projects. You can go to http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,64046,00.html and read the details. Google Suggest. Gtalk integration with Gmail are some examples.
