Always ON

No posts after promising to be regular.

I am facing a lot of problems with my internet connection, it was effectively down for last two months, I hardly got access for about 20 hours in last two months. So I got it disconnected and started looking for a new connection. This story is about getting a new internet connection only. Let me give you a a bit of backdrop. I switched to this ISP (Internet Service Provider) from another one which I used for around 5 months, the problem: it was very irregular in connection, and I got fed up of keep calling their customer care center. The first connection I got was from another ISP and believe me it was one of the best, no down time at all and it was literally always on for four months at a stretch. But I had to shift my residence and my ISP, asked for a steep fee for change of connection, the most atrocious part was that a new connection was available for free but they were hell bent on charging me shifting charge. Foolish, foolish people and really dumb business rule and on top of that they were not ready to change it. I tried to play smart and asked for a new connection but they refused me that saying an existing customer can't get a new connection and asked me to pay for that month as well, though clearly i was not using their services. Till date I receive their messages to pay my dues and they are offering a 7% discount If I pay through their site.

I have noticed one thing that any service I have taken works fine for 2 -3 months and after that they all turn bad. Well anyhow this time I really want to get an always on connection and I don't want a foolish provider either. I thought that I should go for MTNL, though they are known for their tons of paper work and days of waiting before getting a connection, but I wanted to trust them as one of my friend has been using MTNL Triband and recommended it highly to me. Yesterday I thought I should pay a visit to MTNL office, since it's a government office I prepared like Mussaddi Lal, got up early, took a bath (I hate that on Saturday morning) and got ready in formals (I didn't want to make any wrong impression on the Sarkari Babus). I reached the MTNL's office and the first thing I read was this ....

I was more scared, will all the people inside be after my money. I entered office, believe it was really good and the Air conditioning was also good. The environment was really a lot different from the Office Office telephone office. Though I thought this may be the Naya Office Office. I sat in front of a Customer Care Officer (cool designation) and asked her if I can get a MTNL's Triband connection, she told me that I need a telephone connection for that. I thought Tarun you are getting tricked into, may be you should slip some money to her. But I curbed my inner voice and asked her what should I do to get that, she gave me a procedure and after she asked me if I want connection in the same area, (no I want the connection in Timbuktu) well yes I need it here. She said that in this area they are not giving any new MTNL Triband connection as there is some problem with ports, but it will be fixed soon. How soon I asked her, 5 to 6 months she said with a smile. What the hell?? That's soon, I shudder to think what will happen if they say it may take some time. I walked out and I don't know whether I was more upset about not getting a connection or just about getting up early on a saturday morning. While walking in the market I thought to myself, Tarun were you supposed to pay her some money to get a connection??? May be but I don't really want to pay a bribe to get a MTNL Triband connection.

I am still looking for an ISP that can let me connect to internet, but not yet found anyone good. I don't really want to go back to all the ISPs that I have tried before, but this has lead to a situation where I don't really have an internet connection.

I thought while going through :
1. the early morning traffic
2. the pain of not being able to get an internet connection

Hehe - ya MTNL is too slow to get you hooked up. But their service is very good. I've had them since February 2006 - and my nets gone down only once since then. And that too - for just one day. Which is much better than my past experience with ISPs in Mumbai.

I've heard that Airtel is very good too. And Tata Indicom also has good plans. But some people have been very pleased with Tata while others have had nightmare experiences. I guess their service quality depends on your locality.

Are you going to be there at the Mumbai Barcamp?

Ya, all are random services. You never know which service provider will work well in which area. One of my friend never had any issue with the same ISP that I was calling up day in day out to get few hours of internet.

I will be there at the Barcamp Mumbai, I am sure it's going to be really good.

We all know that broadband suppliers advertise their speeds as "up to"
a certain level. But how fast is your actual connection? Now you can
find out with our broadbandspeed test, use the
checker below to find out. To get accurate results make sure that you
are not using your internet connection for anything else while the test
runs (it only takes a few seconds)
